Pregnancy and the postpartum period can be significant adjustments, and sometimes moms experience troubles during pregnancy and afterwards that go beyond the “baby blues”. Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) are not uncommon during pregnancy or afterwards, though often go untreated. One in five women will experience depression or anxiety during pregnancy or in the postpartum period (MN Department of Health). Signs can include excessive worry, low mood, difficulty sleeping, as well as other symptoms (read my blog post here to help you determine if you should schedule a consultation). There are risk factors associated with PMADs-if you have experienced any of the below and have questioned if you may have anxiety or depression, reach out for a consultation (schedule).
Previous pregnancy loss/miscarriage
Infertility treatment
Perfectionistic personality traits
Traumatic birth experience
Difficulties with breastfeeding
Having twins, triplets, etc
History of depression, anxiety or other mental health diagnoses
Therapy can help during pregnancy to address problems before the postpartum period, and by making a plan for coping once baby is here. Therapy can also help after birth by talking about clear strategies to improve sleep, getting more help from your support system, discussing concerns related to feeding or infant sleep, and setting realistic expectations about this phase. We can also work on improving negative thinking patterns and promote more helpful thoughts, which can improve your mood.
